Portola Music Festival 2026: Two Days of Dancing, Big Productions, and Unforgettable Moments at Pier 80
San Francisco’s Pier 80 once again transformed into a massive dance floor as Portola Music Festival returned for its fifth year on September 26 and 27. Known for bringing together electronic music, pop, and everything in between, Portola has created a festival experience that feels uniquely San Francisco.
This year was no exception. The weekend brought massive productions, unexpected moments, elaborate festival fashion, and, of course, the unpredictable waterfront weather. Cold and windy conditions followed festivalgoers throughout the weekend, but that didn’t stop anyone from showing up ready to dance.
In fact, dancing became one of the best ways to stay warm.
Saturday
As I walked onto the pier, I headed straight to the warehouse for Max Styler, whose set brought the energy I was looking for. The space was packed with festivalgoers, and Styler delivered a strong performance that kept everyone dancing from the start.
Next was Robyn on the Pier Stage. Her set was easily one of the weekend’s most memorable performances.
During “Dancing on My Own,” the music suddenly cut out during the first chorus. Rather than letting the moment interrupt the performance, the crowd took over completely, singing the song word for word until the music returned.
Standing in the middle of thousands of people singing the same song together was one of those moments that reminds you why live music is so special. It actually brought tears to my eyes. Pure magic.
Fatboy Slim brought the masses to the Crane Stage, playing the rave classics we all know and love. The crowd was fully locked in, keeping the energy high as the set continued.
Dog Blood closed out the Pier Stage beneath the full moon with pyro and fireworks. Their highly anticipated reunion delivered exactly what fans had been waiting for—and more. The combination of their high-energy set, massive production, and the full moon overhead made for one of the most memorable moments of the weekend.
Prospa rounded out the night in the warehouse, where festivalgoers packed together and danced to stay warm. The vibes were high as the crowd carried that energy into Soulwax, who closed out the night at the Crane Stage.
Overall, Day 1 was the perfect way to kick off the weekend.
Sunday
Sunday brought another full day of music, and my day started at the Ship Tent with Ben UFO, who always holds it down for fans whenever he’s in the States.
Next came the highly anticipated hometown reunion for underscores. Her performance at the Crane Stage was full of energy as she twirled around and gave it her all, completely owning the space.
Ninajirachi was another highlight of the day and even brought underscores out at the beginning of her set, giving the crowd an unexpected moment before the rest of the day unfolded. Fans were clearly excited to see her, and her energy was unmatched.
Then came Zara Larsson, bringing her summer vibes to the Pier Stage. Her island-themed production and colorful outfits immediately set the tone for a performance everyone had been waiting for. With a crew of gorgeous backup dancers and an all-female band, Zara delivered a full-scale pop spectacle in the middle of Portola.
Fans sang along to every song, completely immersed in the performance.
During “Lush Life,” Zara brought a fan from the audience onto the stage to dance with her, creating a fun and unexpected moment. She knows how to command a stage while keeping the audience engaged and on their toes.
Swedish House Mafia followed Zara, taking the Pier Stage from pop to rave with one of the weekend’s biggest productions. Pyro and fireworks filled the space as the trio brought their arena-sized sound to Pier 80.
Four Tet closed out the weekend with a completely different kind of spectacle.
He brought his own lighting design, created by Ed Warren, and it was unlike anything I had ever seen before. At one point, the lighting dropped down over our heads, leaving the entire warehouse in awe. The design was perfectly curated to follow the mood and movement of the music, creating a visual experience that I’ll never forget.
It was one of those performances that truly took you somewhere else. Four Tet’s ability to create an atmosphere through both sound and light was the perfect way to close out the weekend.
More Than the Music
One of the things that makes Portola unique is that there is always something happening outside of the music.
This year, festivalgoers could take a break from dancing at the roller-skating rink or discover the hidden speakeasy located by Disco Chicken. Goldenvoice is always great about giving us those little side quests to explore throughout the festival. There was also a photobooth, plenty of food options, and a lounge area where festivalgoers could take a break whenever needed.
Portola fans are also known for their iconic looks, and despite the cold and wind coming off the waterfront, everyone still showed up dressed for the occasion. From costumes to fashion-forward festival looks, Pier 80 was filled with people who clearly weren’t going to let the weather interfere with their plans.
When the temperature dropped, the answer seemed to be simple: buy one of the cute Portola hoodies and keep dancing.
Until Next Year
Portola 2026 was truly one of a kind.
With each set offering something different, the weekend came together to create the kind of experience Portola has become known for. From unexpected moments and massive productions to intimate crowd interactions and unforgettable visuals, there was always something happening around every corner.
For two days, thousands of fans came together to dance, dress up, discover new music, meet new people, and experience some of the biggest names in music from around the world.
Portola proved once again that San Francisco sure knows how to party.
