Singer Amber Mark delivered a polished and soulful R&B/pop performance on the Los Angeles stop of the Pretty Idea Tour at the Fonda Theater on March 21, giving her glamorous fans a night out to remember.
Openers Rebel and Sherwyn opened the show and got the crowd warmed up, and by the time Mark took the stage at 10pm fans were all gassed up to cheer and sing along.
Mark started the show off with “Let Me Love You,” “Mixer,” and fan favorite “Sweet Serotonin.” Throughout the 23 song set she held a vibe that was kind of classy-retro, with her band dressed in suits, and fully funky but not showing off, and as she moved through her catalog with very solid song choices she showed off both her R&B and pop range.
While taking photos I was at the very front, then at the very back, then up in the balcony, and in each spot almost everyone was singing all the words. In the middle of her set she threw in some fun covers, like “Vogue,” “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” and “I Feel For You,” giving the crowd a fun little nostalgic jolt from key tracks from powerhouse women. Other favorites of the set were “Cherry Reds” and “By the End of the Night.”
Mark is a confident pro onstage, and having recently come off an opening spot touring with Sabrina Carpenter, she has the chops now playing both midsized venues and huge spaces, and can carry both. She’s also led an interesting international life, and did a great AMA on Reddit five years ago which gives some great insight into her five-years-ago process and thinking.
The Pretty Thing tour continues for a few more dates in North America, then scoots over to the UK/Europe for more shows through May. You can get all the latest information at www.ambermarkmusic.com and @instagramber
