The Academy Is… brought fans back to the early 2000s on May 8th at The UC Theatre in Berkeley as they celebrated the 20th anniversary of their debut album “Almost Here.” The night was filled with emotion, unforgettable energy, and the kind of connection that reminded everyone why this era of emo pop-punk music still holds such a special place in so many people’s hearts.
Opening the evening was Jon Walker, who delivered a heartfelt and intimate set that instantly connected with the crowd. His stage presence felt genuine and familiar, creating the perfect tone for the night ahead. He covered songs by Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco. Fans sang along and soaked in every moment, clearly appreciating the opportunity to experience a piece of the scene-era nostalgia that shaped so many of us growing up.
As soon as The Academy Is… hit the stage and opened with “Attention,” the energy inside The UC Theatre completely exploded. The crowd immediately erupted into cheers, singing every lyric back word for word from the very first note. Performing songs from “Almost Here,” the band created an atmosphere that felt both nostalgic and electric, transporting fans right back to the songs that got so many of us through our high school years.
William Beckett’s vocals sounded just as strong and emotionally charged as fans remembered, while the band’s chemistry on stage felt effortless throughout the entire set. The audience fed off every moment, turning the venue into one giant singalong packed with emotion and excitement.
Beckett’s stage presence remained captivating throughout the night, carrying and swinging a flag for nearly the entire performance while fully commanding the stage. He even brought out a megaphone during the set, adding even more personality and energy to an already unforgettable show.
Visually, the production remained simple yet tasteful, perfectly fitting the nostalgic atmosphere of the night. Plants placed throughout the stage added a warm and intimate touch to the performance without distracting from the music itself. The understated production allowed the connection between the band and the crowd to remain front and center, making the entire evening feel both personal and timeless.
Overall, the night was a perfect celebration of “Almost Here” and the lasting impact The Academy Is… continues to have on alternative music. Between Jon Walker’s emotional opening set and the band’s unforgettable anniversary performance, the show proved that some albums truly never lose their meaning no matter how much time passes.
