At The Wiltern on March 6, London duo Franc Moody gave fans a buoyant, groove-driven set that turned the house into a communal dance floor. The mixed crowd was there to move and sing, and Franc Moody delivered exactly what everybody wanted.
Opening with newer material from their latest album Chewing the Fat, Ned Franc and Jon Moody plus their touring drummer and bassist set the tone early with “Sharks in the Water,” combining tight musicianship with kaleidoscopic lighting. Soon after came “Dream In Colour” and “Love Will Make You Do Strange Things,” which went emotionally further than their recorded versions and were great to witness live.
A big moment arrived with “Terra Firma,” from Dream in Colour, the release that first brought Franc Moody wider recognition. The newer “Going Through the Motions” followed, with its blend of soul, funk, and EDM giving the crowd what they came for. One of the night’s peak moments was “Skin to Skin,” with everybody singing along and moving in sync to the London funk happening on stage.
Even after the night closed with an encore of “Yuri” and “Dopamine,” the fans looked like they could’ve kept going for another whole encore or three. But that was the end, 20 songs and then we were all out into the warm night air.
Franc Moody’s North American tour has wrapped, and a few European dates are set for July, but if this Los Angeles stop was any indication the next time they’re touring they’re going to sell out even bigger venues, so get your tickets quick when they come back around.
