The moment the iconic heavy metal legends stepped onto the stage of the Grand Theatre in Reno, Nevada, fans were transported into a world of raw power and nostalgia. With the release of their new album, Invincible Shield (the band’s 19th studio album, released in March of 2024), it gained their highest position ranking ever on the UK charts at number two.

The stakes were high, but the band delivered beyond all expectations, with an electrifying atmosphere that only a band of Judas Priest’s stature could create, delivering a performance that will be remembered by fans for years to come. The Grand Theatre, known for its intimate atmosphere, provided the perfect backdrop for the legendary band to showcase their extensive catalog, weaving a tapestry of sound that left the audience enthralled.

Over the loudspeakers, Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” started playing as the house lights went black. The fans started to pound their feet and seats, heightening the anticipation of Judas Priest hitting the stage. “Boom boom Priest, boom boom Priest,” was the thunderous cheer from the massive crowd. Chills crawled up my neck, adding to my anxiety. Dimmed lights lit a large banner that was draped from the ceiling to the floor with a scripture of lyrics from the song “Invincible Shield,” and on each side were banners depicting the album cover with the “Invincible Shield” logo. “War Pigs” had faded out, and the notes of “Panic Attack,” from their new album, charged up the atmosphere. The curtain dropped, and we were off to the heavens of Heavy Metal, led by the metal god himself, Rob Halford.

You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’” was a fitting tribute to the band’s enduring legacy, encapsulating the essence of what Judas Priest represents—resilience, the indomitable spirit of heavy metal, and a perfect way to kick it into high gear with nostalgia and adrenaline. “Rapid Fire” hit us hard for the third song of the set, from their 1980 album British Steel.

In the heart of the evening, as the crowd’s anticipation peaked, the haunting notes of “Sinner” filled the venue, drawing everyone into an energetic frenzy. Halford took center stage, looking fierce in his signature leather ensemble.

Halford often snuck off stage during guitar solos or the ending of a song to change wardrobe—well, actually, it was his shield in different leather or denim jackets.

The night was a mix of classic hits and newer material, with fan favorites like “Painkiller,” “Breaking the Law,” and “Victim of Changes” sending waves of nostalgia through the audience. Each song was met with cheers and sing-alongs, creating a sense of unity among metalheads of all ages. The band’s chemistry was evident, with guitarists Randy Sneap and Richie Faulkner exchanging riffs seamlessly, while bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis laid down thunderous lows, elevating the performance to new heights.

One of the standout moments of the night was the performance of “Crown of Horns,” where Halford’s vocal mastery shone brightly, evoking a sense of raw emotion that had the crowd captivated. The visuals were perfectly synchronized with the music, and light displays enhanced the overall experience, bringing the metal anthems to life.

The setlist was thoughtfully curated, striking a balance between beloved classics and material from their latest album, ensuring that both longtime fans and newcomers found something to enjoy. The band’s passion and commitment to their craft were evident, as they engaged with the audience, encouraging them to join in the celebration of heavy metal.

For their first encore song, the unmistakable opening notes of “Electric Eye,” pierced the air, igniting the crowd’s energy, and Halford demonstrated that age was no match for the band’s talent and stage presence, with Halford hitting notes that showcased the incredible range that has defined his career.

As the concert neared its conclusion, Halford once again faded to stage right behind a curtain. Instead of a jacket change, you could hear the roaring of his motorcycle warming up to enter the stage. Halford rode onstage as the band ripped into a heart-stopping performance of “Hell Bent for Leather,” leaving fans breathless and eager for more. And there was more—Judas Priest easily could have ended the show, but to our amazement, the band erupted into “Living After Midnight.”

Judas Priest’s concert at the Grand Theatre was a triumphant display of heavy metal prowess. It was a night where time seemed to stand still, allowing fans to revel in the music that has defined generations. With a perfect blend of classic tracks and newer material, Judas Priest proved once again why they are one of the genre’s most enduring and influential bands. As the last notes faded into the night, it was clear that the metal gods still reign supreme.
