On September 27, 2024, Cold Cave graced The Chapel in San Francisco with a performance that was both haunting and electrifying, reaffirming their status as one of the most compelling acts in the realm of darkwave and synth-pop. From the moment the band took the stage, it was clear that this would be a night steeped in atmosphere and emotion.

The intimate setting of The Chapel—a venue known for its excellent acoustics and warm ambiance—provided the perfect backdrop for Cold Cave’s music, which blends brooding melodies with pulsating electronic rhythms. As the lights dimmed and the opening notes of “She Reigns Down,” from their new album Passion Depression (set to be released on October 15th), filled the air, the audience was instantly captivated. Wesley Eisold’s commanding presence, combined with the rich, textured soundscapes created by the band, transported the crowd into a world of shadowy beauty and introspection.

Throughout the evening, Cold Cave delivered a setlist that spanned their discography, featuring tracks from their earlier works, such as “Youth and Lust” from their debut album Love Comes Close (2009), alongside newer material from Passion Depression. Each song was infused with an intensity that kept the audience engaged, swaying and lost in the music. The standout performance of the night came with the hauntingly beautiful “Confetti,” where the blend of Eisold’s ethereal vocals and the lush synths created a moment of collective euphoria.

Visually, the concert was striking. The interplay of light and shadow, paired with minimalist yet evocative projections, enhanced the overall atmosphere. The subtlety of the visuals complemented the music without overshadowing it, allowing the emotional weight of the performance to shine through.

Eisold’s interaction with the crowd was genuine and warm, creating a sense of camaraderie that felt palpable. He shared anecdotes that resonated with both longtime fans and newcomers alike, making everyone feel a part of the experience. The chemistry between the band members was evident, with each musician contributing to the overall sound and energy of the performance.

As the night drew to a close with the powerful “Promised Land,” co-written with Amy Lee of Evanescence in 2019, the audience erupted in applause—a testament to the night’s transcendent energy. Cold Cave left the stage, but the reverberations of their performance lingered, echoing long after the last note faded.

In summary, Cold Cave’s concert at The Chapel was a profound experience, where sound, emotion, and visual artistry intertwined seamlessly. For those fortunate enough to be in attendance, it was a reminder of the power of music to evoke feelings and create connections in an increasingly fragmented world. If this concert was any indication, Cold Cave continues to evolve, solidifying their legacy as a vital force in the contemporary music scene.
