Dogstar on Their Summer Vacation Tour at Hard Rock Live in Wheatland, CA
September 14, 2024

As the lights dimmed at Hard Rock Live in Wheatland, the venue—known for its intimate yet electrifying atmosphere—provided the perfect backdrop for an evening filled with nostalgia and fresh energy. The fans were buzzing with anticipation as Dogstar, the band that once made waves in the ’90s and has enjoyed a nostalgic revival, took the stage to a cheering crowd of devoted fans and new listeners alike.

From the moment the first notes rang out, it was clear that Dogstar had not lost their magic. The band, with actor and musician Keanu Reeves on bass guitar, delivered an energetic performance that seamlessly blended their classic hits with a fresh sound. The chemistry among the band members was palpable, with each member—Reeves, Robert Mailhouse (drums, backing vocals, and harmonica), and lead singer and guitarist Bret Domrose—showcasing their individual talents while maintaining a cohesive sound. The audience was treated to a selection of their greatest tracks, but what stood out were two new songs that the band debuted that evening.

The first new track, tentatively titled “Chasing Shadows,” showcased a melodic groove, and the punchy rhythm section laid down a captivating beat while Domrose’s smooth vocals soared. The second new song, “Falling Stars,” explored themes of longing and connection, blending a funk-infused bass line with atmospheric instrumentation to evoke emotional depth and storytelling.

Throughout the concert, it was evident that Dogstar’s time away from the limelight has only honed their songwriting skills. The new material reflects a maturation and evolution while paying homage to their influences. Fans drew parallels between the seductive melodies of the new tracks and the 1980s classic rock sound, encapsulating nostalgia with a modern twist.

The concert wasn’t just about the new material, though. Dogstar kept the energy high with fan favorites like “Everything Turns Around,” “This is What Math is For,” and perhaps their most dynamic hit, “Breach.”

Dogstar also treated fans to a beautiful cover of “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure. The crowd’s response was thunderous, clearly reflecting the band’s enduring impact and the connection they’ve forged with their audience over the years.

Overall, Dogstar’s concert at Hard Rock Live was a testament to their growth as artists while still honoring their roots. With the inclusion of the two new songs, it’s clear the band is not just resting on their legacy but is eager to carve a new path in the contemporary music scene. A must-see for any fan of rock music, it was a night filled with nostalgia, excitement, and a promising glimpse into Dogstar’s future.
