On August 28, 2024, Oracle Park in San Francisco played host to an unforgettable night of classic rock, featuring legendary bands Def Leppard and two native Bay Area bands, Journey and the Steve Miller Band. With a crowd filled with passionate fans, the atmosphere was electric from the moment the gates opened.

The Steve Miller Band kicked off the evening, hitting the stage with their signature sound that has spanned decades. The band opened with “Space Intro” and swung into “Swingtown,” instantly igniting a wave of nostalgia throughout the venue. Steve Miller’s smooth vocals and trademark guitar riffs set a laid-back yet lively tone for the night. Songs like “The Joker” and “Fly Like an Eagle” resonated beautifully in the open-air stadium, engaging the audience with sing-alongs and cheers. Miller’s band, tight and polished, kept the energy high, showcasing their musicianship and charisma.

Next up was Journey, and the excitement in Oracle Park reached new heights. With lead vocalist Arnel Pineda delivering powerful renditions of the band’s most beloved hits, Journey’s set was a masterclass in rock performance. The crowd erupted as they launched into “Only the Young” and “Stone in Love,” creating a breathtaking atmosphere. The band expertly balanced classic anthems, captivating fans of all ages. The stunning light show combined with soaring melodies made for a visually and emotionally charged experience. The camaraderie between the band members was evident, and their passion for the music shone through with every note.

Neal Schon, the only original member of Journey, was in high spirits as he treated the crowd to a walk down the stage, playing to the audience. It was magical and powerful to see this legend up close and experience his masterful musicianship.

A couple of highlights of the evening came when Schon paid tribute to Steve Perry, the original singer, and credited him for the collaboration on the song “Lights,” which was sung remarkably on point by Deen Castronovo, all the while playing the drums. The second highlight was Schon’s guitar solo right before they broke into “Wheel in the Sky.”

Journey played a 90-minute set of classic songs, ending their set with “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

Finally, Def Leppard took the stage to a full house, bringing the night to a climactic close. Their high-octane performance was a reminder of why they remain one of rock’s most beloved bands. They opened with “Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)” and quickly pulled the audience in with hits like “Rocket,” “Foolin’,” and “Too Late for Love.” Lead singer Joe Elliott’s charismatic presence and playful banter were supported by the powerful drumming of Rick Allen and the dynamic guitar work of Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell, along with deep bass lines and backing vocals by Rick Savage, and together they delivered an electrifying set. The band’s energy was infectious, and the crowd responded with enthusiasm, singing along to every word. The stunning and vibrant stage production added to the spectacle, making it a night to remember. It was an evening that blended nostalgia with high-voltage energy, showcasing the band’s prowess in a spectacular outdoor setting.

The concert was not just about the music, it was a celebration of the band’s enduring legacy. Elliott took a moment to reminisce about their early days and express gratitude toward the fans who have supported them throughout their journey. This personal touch resonated deeply with the audience, creating a sense of unity among all present.

Midway through the set, Elliott delivered a beautiful solo acoustic rendition of “Two Steps Behind,” and the band followed up with a full-band acoustic version of “This Guitar.”

As the night drew to a close, the band delivered a powerful encore with “Photograph” and “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” culminating in an exhilarating performance as the crowd was on their feet, singing and swaying as the final notes rang out.

Def Leppard’s concert at Oracle Park was an unforgettable experience, filled with timeless rock anthems and a vibrant atmosphere, and the stunning light displays and multimedia screens enhanced the experience, creating a vibrant backdrop that matched the intensity of the music. The band’s ability to connect with the audience and deliver an electrifying performance showcased why they remain an indomitable force in the music world. For anyone lucky enough to be in attendance, it was a night to remember and a true testament to the power of rock and roll.

Overall, the night was a perfect celebration of classic rock, showcasing the incredible talent and enduring appeal of these iconic bands.
