Stepping into the Kilowatt Bar for the Niis band show was like entering a bunker of high octane sound and explosive energy. The band, known for their eclectic fusion of punk, hardcore and grunge had promised a night to remember, and they delivered in spades.

From the moment they took the stage, the Los Angeles punk band commanded attention. The band set the tone with an infectious energy, engaging the audience immediately. Lead vocalist Mimi’s charisma and dynamic range captivated the crowd, while the band members displayed impressive synergy, creating a high octane soundscape.

NIIS, pronounced “Nice,” is a four-piece band comprised of guitarist Ryan McGuffin, drummer Monte Najera, and bassist Izabella all from the San Fernando Valley, plus Bay Area frontwoman Mimi SanDoe. Together they merge the sounds of punk, hardcore, lo-fi garage, and early grunge to create a singular rock sound unique only to them, with influences by punk bands like Bad Brains, X, Dead Kennedys, and Subhumans. The band’s songs are “reflections of Mimi’s lived experiences, like ‘Fuck You Boy,’ a commentary on what it’s like to grow up in a male-dominated music scene permeated with misogyny and sexism.”

The stage setup was simple yet effective, with thoughtful lighting that accentuated the mood of each song. The band’s choreography and coordinated movements also added a theatrical flair that kept the audience visually engaged. It was evident they were not just musicians, they were performers who have an ability to connect with the audience. Mimi, the lead singer, frequently engaged with fans, checking in and asking the crowd to play hard, but play nice. This interaction made the show feel personal and intimate.

Overall, Niis band’s show at Kilowatt was a triumphant celebration of music and community. Their blend of genres and energetic performances left a lasting impression, and it was clear that the audience was left wanting more. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer, seeing Niis live is an experience not to be missed. But be prepared for a hardcore churning pit.

It’s safe to say Niis are one of the hardest working bands to come out of Los Angeles in the past few years, slashing their way through LA’s underground punk scene.

Niis is currently working on their first full-length album, which doesn’t have a release date, but in the meantime has released two singles plus videos for “Big Zoo” and “Crazy.” Expect the untamed chaos that Niis unleashes again and again but prepare for an evolving sound that cannot be restrained by the confines of their punk influences.

Niis has just confirmed a spot touring with Bad Religion. You can catch their next show at Hard Rock Live in Wheatland, CA.  on October 19, 2024.
